When she isn’t working in her full-time role at Lone Star College System’s Treasury department, Donna Hammett can often be found volunteering her time with LSC Foundation.
"When the call for volunteers goes out, Donna Hammett is one of the first to sign up and is always at an event from start to finish," said Laura Brown, LSC Foundation director, Special Events. "She is a strong advocate for LSC Foundation. Anything that needs to be done, she will make sure it gets done. We are beyond grateful for her time and dedication to being a volunteer."
Volunteer opportunities range from helping at special events, such as the Golf Tournament and the StarGala, to serving on a student scholarship evaluation committee. Hammett has been supporting these efforts, among others, for over a decade.
“I love to have a small part in helping our students and supporting the Foundation," said Hammett. "Not all of us who work for Lone Star College System have direct contact with the students who walk our campuses, so there are many of us who miss that valuable connection. Lone Star College Foundation provides volunteer opportunities that have helped me to fulfill that need.”
Working for a higher education institution was not always in Hammett’s plan. After earning a degree in finance, she landed a job working at a bank and assumed she would be in that industry long-term. Hammett would later pivot to the real estate business, but after five years building this new phase of her career and juggling raising four children, she decided she needed more structure.
An opportunity at Lone Star College System was just around the corner, and 13 years later, she still calls it home. Hammett is a senior analyst of long-term debt at the college and handles the reconciliation of LSCS’s bonds and property tax revenue. Volunteering with LSC Foundation gives her the chance to see its impact firsthand.
“I’m always so encouraging of people to come and volunteer. The whole work experience is much more enjoyable and rewarding if you get involved,” said Hammett. “You’re allowing students who might not otherwise get a chance to go to school and get an education to better their lives. The Foundation gives them that help and that next step toward CALL changing their future.”
LSC Foundation relies on hundreds of volunteers every year to help fulfill its mission to change lives through student scholarships and quality educational programs achieved by relationship building, fundraising and investment management. This meaningful work would not be possible without the support of volunteers like Hammett. LSC Foundation always has opportunities to volunteer, whether it’s helping at fundraising events, performing office duties or soliciting auction items.
"Small amounts of time among many people can make an incredible impact. Whether you can give a couple of hours or more, the Foundation provides opportunities for personal growth and friendships, all while having fun and fulfilling dreams for students," said Hammett.
