Lone Star College Foundation’s events fund various scholarship programs, including the annual LSCS Chancellor’s Essay Contest, that help students like Mia Pierson achieve their academic and career goals.
“Lone Star College System remains inspired as we hear the remarkable journeys our students go through to earn a college education,” said Mario K. Castillo, J.D., LSCS chancellor. “Helping students overcome obstacles toward a better life is exactly the mission of Lone Star College System.”
When Pierson’s classmates excitedly announced their educational plans after high school, the 4.0 AP scholar and dual-credit student was left feeling out of place as she grieved the loss of her grandmother and was overwhelmed without academic prospects on the horizon. Sitting teary-eyed and wondering what was next, LSCS threw Pierson a lifeline.
“In my senior year, I was dealing with an unimaginable loss, was unaware of how to navigate the college application process and missed all of the deadlines,” she said. “However, I was also drawn to Lone Star College System after hearing about the Honors College program during a presentation at my high school. Honors students shared how the program helps students in preparing for transfer to four-year universities while providing unique opportunities for research, leadership and even studying abroad.”
Pierson interned in the LSCS Marketing and Communications department and graduated from LSC-Montgomery in spring 2025 with an associate of arts degree. She is attending the University of Texas at Austin this fall, majoring in International Business and minoring in Supply Chain Management. Pierson believes LSCS and LSC Foundation have had a tremendous impact on her future career in international trade.
“I believe that Lone Star College System has equipped me with invaluable research skills, leadership experience and personal growth that will not only ease my transition to UT Austin but will continue to benefit me throughout my life and career.”
The Chancellor’s Donor Appreciation Luncheon recognized 16 students, including Pierson, who earned scholarships for their winning entries. Each LSCS campus selected two students to receive the scholarship. The 2024 recipients were:
