Lone Star College has many programs to keep the community safe and LSC Foundation helps support that effort with scholarships, endowments and other funding opportunities to help students pay for their education.

“Lone Star College and Lone Star College Foundation offer various types of financial assistance like scholarships, grants and relief funds to help students,” said Mario K. Castillo, J.D., LSC chancellor. “We are here to help them grow into a bright future by helping to remove financial obligations that may hinder their efforts.”

Nicholas Chuck, an LSC-CyFair Fire Science student, was awarded the Charles “Chuck” L. Willis endowed scholarship. He says the scholarship has allowed him to start strong by focusing on the courses.

“Receiving this scholarship through Lone Star College Foundation was a profound honor that alleviated the financial constraints at the onset of my academic journey,” said Chuck. “The funds enabled me to acquire essential uniforms for the classroom and practical training, fostering unity with fellow cadets and facilitating growth within the program.”

Chuck enrolled in the Fire Science program to drive his desire for personal growth. He believes it has prepared him to serve in the fast-paced, high-demand field. He credits the hands-on training, experienced instructors, exposure to real-world scenarios and alumni expertise for enriching his learning experience.

“I chose a career in fire science because of my deep religious views and unwavering passion for assisting and safeguarding my community,” he said. “Through the Lone Star College Fire Science program, I aspire to leverage my acquired knowledge, refine my leadership abilities and develop strategic skills to effectively serve the community through crises, i.e., Hurricane Harvey.”

Chuck graduated from the LSC Fire Academy in May 2024 and will complete the Fire Science program in fall 2024 after taking EMS and other program-related courses. He plans to continue his education by earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in Emergency Management from LSC-North Harris.

The LSC Fire Science Technology program is available at LSC-CyFair, LSC-Kingwood and LSC-Montgomery. Students learn basic and advanced skills, including operating fire streams, performing various rescues and using firefighting equipment. Graduates enter the fire service field as qualified firefighters and emergency personnel.
