Lone Star College offers a robust and competitive Dual Credit program that allows students to earn credit toward college-level certificates and associate degrees while still in high school.
“Dual credit is a great opportunity to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously,” said Gerald Napoles, Ph.D., LSC vice chancellor, Student Success. “Benefits include saving money on college tuition, earning a college certificate or degree faster and transferring credits earned to four-year colleges and universities.”
Dual Credit at LSC allows high school students to pay a reduced tuition rate, saving nearly $800 and the cost of their textbooks. The program also prepares them to transition smoothly to college life. Sarah Olufemi-Dada, a Cypress Lakes High School and LSC-CyFair graduate through the College Academy, said dual credit helped her get a head start on her college education. By earning college credits while still in high school, she saved time and reduced her financial burden before attending Stanford University.
“Lone Star College Dual Credit courses have given me a strong academic foundation and equipped me with essential life skills and a broader perspective,” said Olufemi-Dada. “These experiences have prepared me to thrive at Stanford and have a successful future beyond academia.”
Olufemi-Dada credits LSC-CyFair for entering Stanford with an extensive academic foundation, including rigorous coursework and high standards of instruction. She believes those opportunities will help her pursue a chemical engineering degree, specializing in biomedical computation. Olufemi-Dada’s career aspirations are in biotechnology, where she intends to concentrate on research, positively impacting individuals and the environment.
“My experiences at Lone Star College-CyFair helped me develop important life skills,” said Olufemi-Dada. “I’ve learned to manage my time effectively, work independently and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds – skills essential for success at Stanford and in any future career.”
Under the Dual Credit program, the LSC Early College High School program prepares students to graduate with a diploma and an associate degree or earn at least 60 credit hours toward a baccalaureate degree. ECHS offers rigorous instruction and accelerated courses at no cost to the students. Additionally, students can access academic and support services at LSC, such as the library, campus activities and technology to ensure their success.
“As an Early College High School student, I have the opportunity to take college courses now, which saves me a lot of money and time,” said Xenia Navarro, a Spring Early College Academy student who takes dual classes at LSC-North Harris. “Additionally, I get to experience a taste of college life to discern if it’s something I want to continue post-graduation.”
Lone Star College offers Dual Credit courses at 11 school districts within Harris and Montgomery counties. The college system served 24,415 dual credit students in fall 2023, a 13% increase from fall 2022 (21,465).
