Keeping Lone Star College Safe

The Lone Star College Police Department maintains a safe and secure environment for students, employees and visitors at all LSC campuses and locations. Its core values are to preserve dignity, seek excellence, build public trust, focus on service and leave nothing to chance.

“The Lone Star College Police Department believes policing is as much about education as it is enforcement,” said Paul Willingham, LSC senior associate vice chancellor, Public Safety and chief of police. “The team is cross-trained in various public safety areas, including first aid and mental health.”

The LSC Police Department includes a Patrol Operations Bureau, Behavioral Threat Assessment Unit, Investigations Unit, Special Protection and Response Team, Honor Guard and Dispatch. The law enforcement team is trained to identify and mitigate potential threats of violence and how to handle top-level emergency gear and equipment such as ballistic shields, handguns and rifles with plates and vest carriers.

“We hire top-notch commissioned police officers with the same powers and abilities as any other police officers and noncommissioned public safety officers to help protect and serve our campus community,” said Willingham. “Their high-level experience and training help us to maintain a secure environment where education can thrive.”

LSC Police Department earned International Law Enforcement Accreditation through The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in 2023. The division is now among 4% of American law enforcement agencies with this honor and only the second community college police department in the nation to be recognized. Chief Willingham and his accreditation team testified before the Commission where the LSC Police Department received the accreditation.

“We’ve always known our department had great people devoted to engaging the community and maintaining their safety,” said Willingham. “Accreditation was another way to demonstrate our commitment to our community and industry best practices through an outside credentialing body.”
