Helping students thrive

Changing lives through scholarships and quality educational programs is a key mainstay of of Lone Star College Foundation, that works alongside LSC campuses to develop top-level, hands-on training experience for students.

“Lone Star College Foundation strives to get in on the ground floor of new educational opportunities to help it grow through relationship building, fundraising and investment management,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director.

LSC-Houston North opened its doors five years ago in fall 2019 to address educational attainment and socio-economic disparities that existed in the southern sector of the college’s service area. LSC Foundation played a pivotal role in that from day one by establishing financial resources, scholarships, basic needs assistance programs and academic and workforce partnerships.

“Through Lone Star College Foundation, our students receive assistance paying for classes and accessing course textbooks and course materials,” said Quentin Wright, Ed.D., LSC-Houston North president. “Additionally, Lone Star College Foundation has influenced various donations from the community that help to fund our food pantries and sustain our child care program.”

Food Pantries

LSC-Houston North has partnered with the Houston Food Bank to offer the Food for Change Scholarship, giving students 60 pounds of fresh food once a month. Students enrolled in at least three credit hours can receive fruit, vegetables, bread, yogurt, milk and meat while supplies last. The food distribution event rotates between LSC-Houston North campuses and the college transports food to eligible students who can't attend that month’s event. Additionally, the college operates the C.A.R.E. Centers, which include a food pantry and emergency funding for classes, textbooks, technology or basic life needs. Learn more at LoneStar.edu/CARE-HN.

Electric Vehicles

The LSC-Houston North Electric Vehicle Charging Station Installation and Maintenance Technician Certificate II gives students a hands-on workspace to physically learn how to wire residential and commercial properties, skills learned in the Electrical Technology Certificate Level I program. The Bethune Empowerment Center, a joint venture with the city of Houston, will house a lab with wall-mounted (homes and residential buildings) and pedestal (commercial properties) charging stations to train LSC students on installing, wiring and troubleshooting these charging stations.

Bridging the digital divide.

AT&T Laptops

Lone Star College and AT&T have joined forces to help bridge the digital divide by providing 20 students with laptops and training needed for academic and workforce success.

“A significant gap still exists among certain populations, particularly the historically underrepresented, in having the resources and experience to participate and navigate in the digital world,” said John Maynard, Ed.D., LSC-Houston North vice president, Instruction. “The generous donation from AT&T will help serve as an instrumental tool to bridge the digital divide.”
