Planned Giving...Impacts lives

Karen West

Planned Giving is just one of the ways an individual can designate a sizable donation to Lone Star College Foundation to help students offset the cost of a college education.

“Lone Star College Foundation awards more than $2.6 million in scholarships each year, showing a growing need of students who depend on us to help them with their education,” said Susan Summers, CFRE, LSC Foundation director, Donor Relations. “We are grateful to our community members who thoughtfully include us in their financial plans.”

Waylan and Karen West are longtime friends and supporters of LSC Foundation. They were the first in their families to attend college, but lack of finances threatened to derail their educational goals. Thankfully, generous supporters stepped up to ensure they could attend college.

“Waylan and I know from personal experience that providing financial assistance to someone so they can attend college will definitely change their lives,” said Karen. “A college education impacts one’s future, the community, and ultimately, the nation.”

The Wests created the Karen and Waylan West Endowment (2008) and the Karen and Waylan West Commemorative Endowment (2011) to give LSC-Montgomery students the same helping hand they received to improve their lives. Their endowed scholarships have assisted more than 20 full-time students to earn a degree, credential or transfer hours to a four-year university.

“We know how important an education is, and creating the endowments is our way of giving back and paying it forward,” said Karen. “We always look forward to meeting the recipients at the annual Chancellor’s Donor Appreciation Lunch, receiving letters and sending congratulatory cards when they graduate from Lone Star College.”

The Wests also assisted in the creation of the Bill and Sarah Dudney Memorial Endowment. Karen’s Aunt Sarah participated in LSC’s Planned Giving by designated LSC Foundation as a beneficiary in her will, and thus, became a Legacy Circle member. Sarah, who lived to be 101 and had no children, wanted to ensure her legacy and estate would help future generations.

Donor who designates LSC Foundation in their will or trust will be a part of our Legacy Circle.

“Aunt Sarah made this possible by leaving a sizable portion of her estate to a children’s home, and the remainder was enough to start an endowment through Lone Star College Foundation. She would have been very proud to see her contributions impacting lives.”

Karen served on LSC Foundation Board for 12 years (1999-2011) and was the chair for two years (2007-2009). As a LSC Foundation Board member, a former ISD School Board member, and as a donor, Karen supports education with her time and money.

“We support Lone Star College because it provides so many opportunities to so many people through affordable tuition, scholarships and flexible schedules,” said Karen.
