Tu Camino Supporting an underserved community

Lone Star College, LSC Foundation and Univision Houston awarded the first Tu Camino Essay Scholarship, funded by the Promise Firsts Endowment, in fall 2023. The recipients were assigned an LSC mentor to help them navigate the registration process to ensure they start their college careers strong.

“Lone Star College Foundation is grateful to its donors and supporters who generously fund scholarships, endowments and other financial opportunities for our students,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director. “Best of all, scholarships are ‘gift aids’ and do not need to be repaid.”

Tu Camino Scholarship recipients Kenia Mojarro Mejia, Bianca Pecina and Nancy Segundo shared their aspirations to achieve brighter futures by furthering their education in an essay contest entitled, “How a Lone Star College Scholarship will help me to a better career.”

“I aspire to be a social worker so I can provide resources to help my community because I’ve seen how small actions, kindness and empathy can change someone’s life,” said Segundo. “Receiving this scholarship will have a tremendous impact on me and my family and help me give back to the community.”

LSC Foundation’s Promise Firsts Endowment provides another opportunity to support underserved students on their voyage to success as they unlock their untapped potential.

The Tu Camino Scholarship contest garnered almost 200 entrants to promote the value of higher education in the Hispanic community. The scholarships were awarded during a special ceremony that featured Valerie Jones, Ed.D., LSC-CyFair president, Melissa N. Gonzalez, Ph.D., LSC-Kingwood president and Virginia Fraire, former LSC-University Park president.
