Lone Star College has been training highly skilled health care workers for nearly 50 years helping students find rewarding careers in many in-demand fields including Emergency Medical  Services, Medical Assisting, Medical Lab Technology, Pharmacy Technology, Surgical Technology and, of course, Nursing.

That tradition continues today  with LSC now offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree without having to leave a LSC campus. LSC BSN graduate Cecilia Nowakowski was recently honored by HCA-Conroe as the 2021 Employee of the Year.

“I am passionate about people,” said Nowakowski, who earned her LSC BSN in August 2021. “Nursing is a combination of science and love, as well as doing what is right and serving others.”

LSC also played a pivotal role during the pandemic by assisting local hospitals impacted by the overwhelming demand for health care workers recruit first- and second year LSC nursing students. These students assisted in basic treatments (monitoring pulse rates, temperature checks, etc.) freeing up more experienced nurses to focus on and treat patients in critical conditions. In addition, LSC trained certified nurses to serve as acute care technicians.

“We are proud of the relationships we have with our health care partners,” said Linda Leto Head, LSC Senior Associate Vice Chancellor Employer and External Relations. “Lone Star College remains committed to working side by side with health professionals.”

The Texas Hospital Association reported two years of COVID-19 pandemic care have strained hospital resources and capacity like never before. In addition, there is a huge need for long-term nursing facilities.

“When the Lone Star College Chancellor’s Advisory Council seeks input, council, guidance and support for various ideas, they reach out to respective hospital CEOs and other health-care providers in the community,” said Dr. Debra Sukin, Regional SVP & CEO, Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. “I am fortunate to be among that group of professionals helping to pave the pathway to future success.”

LSC is proud to team up with local hospitals and health care providers and employees to work together to address this critical need and ensure Texas has the long-term workforce necessary to keep the community healthy.
