"Lone Star College works closely with area business and community leaders to develop programs that will properly train future employees to address workforce needs," said Linda Leto Head, LSC senior associate vice chancellor External and Employer Relations. "We also ensure our programs will help students advance in their current positions, prepare them to transfer to a four-year university, obtain industry certification or help meet their other academic and career goals."

Alternative Teacher Certification

The LSC Alternative Teacher Certification Program (ATCP) aims to put more teachers into the classrooms. The program trains individuals who have already completed a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science and have a passion for making a difference in students' lives to become educators. ATCP is available at all eight LSC campuses and prepares students to meet the Texas Education Agency's domains and competencies for their chosen content area.

"In my previous roles (cheerleading, fitness and medical), I taught and led others, which developed my passion to coach children and make positive impacts," said Joshua Perez, an ATCP graduate and sixth-grade science teacher at Westlake Middle School. "The ATCP program at Lone Star College has helped me become an educator who can blend those ideals to make lasting connections with students."

Students must complete at least 300 hours of coursework, field experience and training. ATCP partners with multiple school districts in 35 certification areas and offers flexible course schedules.

Information Technology

LSC offers various computer science programs that teach students how to develop and write programs that store, locate and retrieve documents containing data and information. They learn how to create and modify test code forms and scripts that allow computer applications to run and how to analyze user needs and design software solutions.

"With a computer science degree, students can go into various fields, including artificial intelligence, game design programming, robotics, computer systems, database administration and architecture," said Kimberly Hubbard, LSC-Westway Park Technology Center instructional dean.

Available programs include Cloud Computing, CISCO Academy Computer Programming, Cybersecurity, Mobile/Web Application Development and Visual Communication.

Truck Driving

The LSC Truck Driver CDL Occupational Skills Award program is a seven-week (14-week part-time) course that instructs students on how to drive a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a 26,001 lb. capacity load. They learn to operate, control and monitor trucks and inspect loads to ensure security.

"The truck driving industry will always be around because people will always need commodities," said Ryan Stout, LSC truck driving graduate. "My employer was really impressed by the knowledge and the 240 training hours I received through the Lone Star College Truck Driver CDL program."

Upon completion, students will receive a state-issued commercial driver's license and the opportunity to make between $50,000 (mid-point) and $100,000 (senior level) during their career. LSC also offers a Truck Driver CDL Certificate in partnership with Stevens Transport. This program is a three- to four-week commitment in which students can earn a Class A CDL, a certificate and a job with Stevens Transport.
