A winning partnership

Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI) Community College Partnership Program awarded two $100,000 grants to the Lone Star College-North Harris HVAC and Electrical Technology programs. LSC is one of only 10 community colleges in the country that received the grant for the 2021 and 2022 academic years.

“Johnson Controls, Inc.’s involvement with Lone Star College creates a pathway from the classroom to a career,” said Archie L. Blanson, Ph.D., LSC-North Harris President. “Johnson Controls, Inc. employees visit the campus, meet with students and share real-world experiences from the field.”

LSC Foundation will use the funds to help students gain in-demand knowledge, purchase necessary equipment and obtain skills to support their entry into the industry after graduation.

“This four-year philanthropic effort will help make a difference in students’ lives, and for many, it will change the trajectory of what is possible for their families over time,” said Kevin Vaughn, JCI Vice President and General Manager for Texas. “Our program provides students with classroom knowledge, hands-on experience, mentorship and other valuable resources to help them progress toward a successful career in the infrastructure industry.”

Lone Star College is the educational institution of choice for many people looking to revamp their future for many reasons, such as keeping up with changing industry standards, retooling after employment loss or learning a new skill. Ken Taylor, LSC-North Harris HVAC student and JCI scholarship recipient, is a retired engineer and operations director who managed various manufacturing plants. His plan to take one class led to a whole new career.

“I originally took courses just to fix my air conditioner, but now I will graduate with an associate of applied science degree in HVAC and Refrigeration,” said Taylor. “I am proud to receive this scholarship as it will help me pay my tuition and fees for the semester.”

After earning an associate degree, Taylor plans to enroll in the LSC Bachelor of Applied Science in Energy, Manufacturing and Trades Management program.

The LSC-North Harris HVAC and Electrical Technology Program trains students on the mechanical and electrical/electronic systems involved in contemporary environmental controls. Graduates are skilled to enter the technical service workforce specializing in residential, commercial and industrial environment systems.
