Setting a High Standard

Dr. Claire Phillips and Dr. John J. Theis

The Fulbright Scholar Program is the flagship international educational exchange program and is sponsored by the U.S. government to increase mutual understanding between people from other countries. Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program has awarded 370,000 grants to give winning applicants the opportunity to study or live abroad for up to one year.

In 2022, Dr. John J. Theis, LSC-Kingwood Professor of Political Science and Director of the LSC-Kingwood Center for Civic Engagement and Dr. Claire Phillips, LSC-CyFair Dean of Instruction, Science and Engineering were each awarded a Fulbright scholarship. Fulbright scholars receive round-trip transportation to the host country as well as funding to pay for room, board and incidental costs, based on the cost of living in the host country. Accident and sickness health benefits are also included.

I am looking forward to establishing long-term relationships with partnering universities so as to expand international education at Lone Star College.

“Growing up in Korea I was familiar with the Fulbright Scholar Program, but I never thought that community college professors would be considered,” said Theis. “I had always wanted to return to Korea and thought this would be a good opportunity.”

The process to apply is extensive. Theis and Phillips spent weeks completing the application, writing a series of essays and locating host institutions in Korea and France. In addition to the application, there is a project statement required and essays on cultural competence, teaching philosophy, the country selection, the applicant’s career trajectory and research interests.

“I originally heard about the Fulbright opportunity for administrators through the Community Colleges for International Development  (CCID) organization,” said Phillips. “I am looking forward to establishing long-term relationships with partnering universities so as to expand international education at Lone Star College.”

LSC is the host college for Community Colleges for International Development which helps further international initiatives and develop globally competent workers. The CCID and The Honors College at LSC held an application workshop for faculty and administrators who were interested in becoming Fulbright scholars.
