Finding Hope after loss
Jacob Mayfield

There is no greater hurt a parent can face than to have lost a child at a young age, especially when it occurs without warning.

That was what the Mayfield family faced when their son, Jacob Dillon Mayfield (pictured), suddenly passed away at the age of 27. Jacob was full of life, finding a passion in taking part in speech and debate clubs. After graduating from Kingwood High School, Jacob enrolled in Lone Star College-Kingwood to take business classes and join the LSC Debate Team earning numerous state and national honors. He went on to get his finance degree at the University of Texas and was an investment banker for Guggenheim Securities.

To honor his legacy, the family established the Jacob Mayfield Scholarship to annually award a scholarship in Jacob’s name in perpetuity through an endowment.

“Jacob truly enjoyed his time at Lone Star College,” said Michelle Oliver, Jacob’s mother. “He was an incredibly giving person and creating an endowment in his name is a wonderful way for him to be remembered.”

An endowed scholarship is named for private individuals, corporations or organizations in memory of individuals or in honor of individuals and are then awarded annually in perpetuity. An endowed scholarship is established through LSC Foundation and the donor may set the criteria used in the selection of the recipient.

“He encouraged me to go for things I would never go for, to join things I would never join,” said Rachel Duncan, Jacob’s longtime partner of more than ten years and high school sweetheart. “Jacob taught me that the impossible was never out of reach and that with hard work and determination I could do it.”

The Jacob Mayfield Scholarship has been established with LSC Foundation to help with the full cost of tuition for students aspiring to study business and finance, with the goal of advancing to a four-year university but needing the benefit of LSC to start their post high school educational journey.

“We are truly grateful to the Mayfield family for thinking of others while going through this difficult time,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation Executive Director. “Their thoughtfulness will have an impact on generations to come.”
