Lending a helping hand

Lone Star College Foundation offers emergency funding and programs to help students stay on track toward their educational goals.

For example, the COVID-19 pandemic forced LSC to close campuses and offer academic and workforce programs online. This move exposed the troubling reality that many students did not have the technology to keep up with their studies.

“During the global pandemic, many people faced hardships and had to make tough decisions for themselves and their families,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation Executive Director. “Lone Star College Foundation provided students with technology assistance to ensure they did not give up on their educational goals.”

To address this issue, LSC Foundation used donor funds to gift 68 laptops and three webcams to students enrolled in the spring, summer and fall 2020 semesters. LSC Foundation selected recipients based on technology need, faculty recommendation and if they enrolled in only face-to-face courses that had to move online due to the pandemic. Without the aid, students might not have graduated on time.

“My eyes lit up and I had the biggest smile when I opened the box,” said Krysten Garza (pictured), LSC-Kingwood student who received a new computer through LSC Foundation. “I am so blessed and thankful that there are people out there spreading love and kindness.”

LSC Foundation emergency funds also help students pay for educational or personal costs if they experience a devastating event such as job loss, hurricane, ice storm or a related catastrophe. Learn more at LoneStar.edu/Giving.
